In the structure of being human there is an inherent emptiness or vacuum or longing embedded in the soul that demands to be filled. In the spiritual point of view, these qualities are intended by the Creator for humans to use as a railing to live by in a moment by moment experience of existence. The quality of life that an individual is experiencing depends so much on how he handles the longings of his soul in every step of his journey and development in life, and how he dreams or make goals to fill such emptiness.
People are as complex as the universe. This vacuum or feelings of emptiness are determined by two major influences namely the inherent or genetic nature of a person and the culture or the environment. The intensity and the individual responses of a person to these natural longings of the soul are dependent on these two components of the person in question. Some people are more focused on things that are meaningful to them or those they deem important for their well-being and they know what to do with it, while others and these are the majority try to fill their emptiness with mundane and temporal excitement.
Those people who are focused acknowledge their mistakes and wrong decisions then learn from their mistakes and eventually find ways to drop those mistakes and start changing their ways for the better. We may not be able to correct those mistakes and damages already done in the past but we can leave them behind and change our focus to the new way of living our lives.
To tame our restless nature is not to fill the emptiness but to familiarize with our own individual nature and desires. To familiarize with ourselves and with what we really want in life decreases the intensity of our longings. We often long for something that we don’t really need or that they just cause us stress and problems in the long run.
We may honor our desires but one of the wisest virtues to embrace should be to learn how to detach ourselves from what we consider valuable to us. To detach means that we take things easy and let our soul work for us because it knows what is best. To detach means to surrender our desires to the all-knowing soul that lives within us; this way we unburden ourselves from working too hard to get what we want.
To tame our restless soul therefore is not to fill the vacuum within us by temporal excitement but to familiarize ourselves with the longings of our souls and to surrender to our soul and trust in its ability to bring to us what really matter in our personal lives.
